Vegas PBS Women’s Engagement Council
Purpose of Project:
Vegas PBS Women’s Engagement Council is a group of philanthropic and community-minded women whose members donate $2,000 annually to support the airing of PBS national programs that focus on issues affecting women and girls, the creation of local events and PSAs, and the building of relationships with local non-profit organizations that provide direct services to women and girls to fuel the resulting conversation in our community about issues affecting women and girls living in Las Vegas. Council members will have opportunities to actively participate in the delivery of services to groups within our community who will be directly impacted by the Council’s funding and support.
How Many Volunteers were Involved in this Project:
The Council has two volunteer co-chairs who also serve on the Southern Nevada Public Television Board of Directors.
What Jobs Were Volunteers Responsible For:
Volunteers are co-chairing the Council. Volunteers will chair any committees that are formed as this Council develops.
Benefit to station or community:
This Council helps Vegas PBS fulfill the portion of its mission to engage community members in conversation about issues affecting our community. Both the station and our community will benefit from the funding provided by Council members. This funding will allow Vegas PBS to purchase and air national programming that might otherwise not be affordable. Potential benefits to our community are numerous and include productive relationship building with other non-profit organizations that directly provide services to women and girls in Las Vegas. Vegas PBS will serve as a communications platform to provide education and information about sensitive, important, and topical issues such as sex trafficking, equity in employment, and adequate access to healthcare.

Across Southern Nevada, women are out front, leading our community to greater prosperity in every way imaginable. From small businesses to City Hall, classrooms to hospitals, women are making a difference in our communities and represent 80% of the decision makers. Yet, women and girls still face significant and profound challenges from elementary school to old age. Public television is the lighthouse that shines light on these issues. Our goal is to engage community members in solving these issues at a local level. We believe women who care about the Las Vegas community are our best resource for helping us reach this goal.
Vegas PBS Women’s Engagement Council is a group of philanthropic and community-minded women whose members donate $2,000 annually to support the airing of PBS national programs that focus on issues affecting women and girls. Recent and soon-to-be-aired national PBS programs such as “Women, War and Peace,” “Half the Sky”, “Makers: Women Who Make America”, “Solar Mamas”, “The Invisible War”, “Wonder Women!: The Untold Story of American Superheroines”, “Kind Hearted Woman” and “The Revolutionary Optimists” have addressed prostitution, trafficking, women in |
the military, women’s economic independence and women who have made an impact on their communities. Vegas PBS Women’s Engagement Council is focused on creating local events and PSAs and working with local non-profit organizations that provide direct services to women and girls to fuel the resulting conversation in our community about these issues, all of which affect women and girls living right here in Las Vegas.
Council members will have opportunities to actively participate in the delivery of services to groups within our community who will be directly impacted by the Council’s funding and support. Potential local funding initiatives include the installation of a fiber optic cable between Vegas PBS and The Smith Center for the Performing Arts to provide quick and easy dissemination of cultural programming to public schools, a full time adult communications outreach specialist position to address an existing need in the community, and three thirty-minute programs developed in collaboration with the Women’s Research Institute of Nevada at UNLV that will raise awareness of issues affecting women and girls in Southern Nevada. |
