WFYI, APRIL 3, 2014
For the last nine years, Bernadette Hengesbach (see slideshow) has volunteered each Thursday at WFYI Public Media in Indianapolis, preparing mail in the mornings and tracking data for television programs in the afternoon.
"I do this because I want to support public media," she says. "Public Media can bring so much to so many people from all walks of life. In volunteering here, I feel I touch the whole community."
Bernadette was one of the more than 77 volunteers who attended WFYI's volunteer recognition luncheon on April 3, 2014. The annual luncheon is a perennial favorite of WFYI staff, many of whom serve as wait staff during the catered affair. This year's event was centered on the theme, "Volunteers Are A Recipe for Success." Table centerpieces included a bouquet of kitchen items arranged in colanders.
A central element to the lunch is the Awards ceremony. This year's coveted Ardath Y. Burkhart Award, an honor created to recognize a volunteer who has served as a motivation to others and has encouraged them to do great things, was given to Karine Huys. The Martha Sterrett Service Award went to Claire Wegel, for her "can-do" attitude and her willingness to assist even at the last-minute. A group of community volunteers were honored for their collective work in WFYI's American Graduate Initiative to boost high school graduation rates; and volunteers were honored for their 300 hours and 100 hours of service over the past year. A new level of recognition included honoring those who likely have fulltime jobs but are still able to serve 20 hours in a given year.
In 2013 alone, 1,200 volunteers contributed their time and talents to WFYI. These individuals donated a combined 16,400 hours of service to the station which is the equivalent of $363,539 of in-kind services to WFYI Public Media.
WFYI's volunteer coordinator, Kristy Fozzard, spoke at the luncheon thanking the volunteers for their dedication and commitment. "As someone who has the privilege of working closely with all of you, let me say it is truly an honor to work alongside such a talented group of individuals who care deeply about the educational mission of public media," she said. "We simply could not accomplish all that we do without you. Thank you!"
