Project Title: Quilt exhibits and shows from 1999 to 2005
We contacted Quilt guilds and asked for people to submit their quilts for our show. We then held a quilt exhibit in the studio that we charged admission. We then video taped the quilts and created a quilt show. We then pledged these shows, we had quilters on the phonebank and we had famous quilters from our viewing area doing live tip segments in the studio. It was wild! But we did make a lot of money off these events/shows.
1999-North State Quilts-features the California Sesquicentennial quilt and some of Northern California’s finest quilters with Tips, Hints and How to’s including wonderful show and tell segments
2000- North State Quilts 2000- This show presents some of Northern California’s finest quilts both old and new.
2001- North State Quilts 2001- See Quilts from the Civil War to the Vietnam Conflict, from the Victorian era to the present, from Asia to Hawaii to Central America
2002- United We Quilt-A moving display of American Folk art. Powerful images are inspired by a tragic moment in American history 9-11.
2003- The World of Celtic Quilting- Takes you on a quilting journey from the very traditional Celtic style of quilting to the abstract.
2004- Monkey Wrench Quilt Show- This show features Monkey Wrench quilts from The Museum of the American Quilter’s Society exhibit “New quilts from an old favorite."
2005- A Look Back - the most popular segments of the 1999, 2000 and 2001
The Date of the Project (month/year; one time only? recurring annually?, other) 1999-2005 We held them annually.
How Many Volunteers were Involved in this Project? At least 200 volunteers
What Jobs were Volunteers Responsible for?
They made the quilts, they were the docents for the quilt exhibits, they brought in the quilt poles, they handled all the quilts. Sometimes we held quilt appraisals at the quilt exhibit, sometimes we had a quilt store, some times we had famous quilters come in. for the shows, we basically wrote the scripts and edited the shows; the quilters did the lion’s share of the work. There was a core group of about 10 ladies that started with me on the first show and were here for the last.
How were Volunteers Involved Regarding Planning and Implementation?
The quilters help create the events. We invited many different Quilters groups to the station and listened to what they thought. Then we pulled all the ideas together and created our events and shows.
Key Highlights of the Completed (or Ongoing) Project
KIXE and quilt guilds from a 10 county area have a wonderful relationship now. KIXE has a lot more new members because of them.
Benefit to the Station or Community
These pledge shows were some of our highest pledged shows during those years, they finally started to taper off and that’s why we quit doing them, but in a few years and with a new group of quilters we may just start up again.
Types of documentation that can be shared with others interested in starting a similar program.
