PARTNERING TO PREPARE STUDENTS
KAMU, College Station Texas, hosted several activities for the American Graduate program. KAMU was one of seven stations funded through "Ted Talks Education: National Educational Outreach Proposal" in partnership with WNET, New York. The proposal involved partnering locally with Brazos Valley Council Governments (BVCOG) which serves a seven county region: Brazos, Burleson, Grimes, Leon, Madison, Robertson and Washington. As partners in regional solutions, BVCOG has established an aggressive GED Program that provides one-on-one work in a computer-based program to help students prepare for test-day. Classes are FREE to all students! KAMU-TV partnered with BVCOB to promote on-air recruitment for the classes and visibility on public affairs programs that encourage those without high school diplomas to use the service. KAMU-TV runs instructional lessons daily so those needing tutorials can review the materials and instructions in their homes.

LUNCHEON TO DISCUSS DROPOUT CRISIS
KAMU hosted a luncheon for 265 guests from public and private educational institutions in the 7-county region as well as other service agencies, together with GED Graduates and current GED enrollees. The purpose of the event was to establish a dialog among participants in determining the causes for the dropout crisis locally and why the GED program is succeeding in getting the under-educated re-engaged in education. |
KAMU VIDEOCONFERENCES
Later this November, KAMU and BVCOG will host a videoconference on the cause of the dropout crisis and possible methods of prevention. Also, KAMU will produce a local television broadcast that will utilize excerpts from the TED TALKS EDUCATION special together with excerpts from the luncheon and videoconference featuring a moderator and panel that will reflect on the information gleaned from all of these efforts.With a viewing area that includes over 350,000 homes in 22 counties in Texas through high definition broadcast TV, and analog, cable, DishNetwork and streaming, the availability of free lesson presentations via TV, many more than the 35,648 without diplomas in just the seven county areas can be reached and encouraged to begin their learning process. |
