JOHN DUFF, KTWU
Topeka, KS
John Duff has volunteered on the KTWU production crews since his move to Topeka, KS in 1978. Before his move he volunteered at KCPT in Kansas City for five years. So while he has volunteered to KTWU for 40 years, he has served PBS unselfishly for 45 years.
When John came to KTWU he began working audio and chyron. Along with the usual pledge drives, he assisted regularly with the station’s local public affairs program. He also managed audio when we went offsite for the auctions.
It was quite an honor to move into the new building on the Washburn University campus about 22 years ago. The new facility was quite a change and made the volunteers and donors so proud to be a part of the progress of KTWU. Master Control, Production Control, studio and editing bays were on the ground floor and more offices were upstairs along with a conference room. It was such a privilege to have new chairs, and John acknowledged it. John was part of our digital conversion process.
Nowadays, John works only the chyron, or cg, leaving the digital audio board, phones, and auction to the younger generations. It is rare to have him miss a quarterly membership drive. Usually, he volunteers one or two shifts. It is hard to place a value on his work for us, since part of it is the mentoring of the other volunteers over the years, whether they are students, young adults, or middle aged. He has a quiet voice, and while he likes to tell life stories, he also likes to hear stories. He has been ever so kind to the elderly, not discounting their service and worth. His dedication to PBS is unwavering, and we humbly submit his nomination, full of gratitude.
