THE SCHAUB FAMILY
Nominated by Suzie Blake, WGVU, Major Gifts Coordinator
The Schaub Family has become extremely involved with WGVU Public Media, not only as generous donors, but as volunteers. Their family foundation was established with a commitment to education. The Schaubs became immediately interested in the WGVU Engage Education Committee and have attended almost every WGVU Engage meeting and volunteer opportunity since. In fact, Marcia has worked tirelessly as the co-chair of the Education Committee in a number of station events promoting education and has invited many of her friends to volunteer as well.
Bob and Marcia have been very intentional to include their two sons in all of their foundation decisions. Bob, Marcia and son, Bo, attended the 2014 PBS Annual meeting to gain an increased understanding of the value of PBS in childhood education. Bo Schaub spent a semester interning for WGVU focusing on educational opportunities and events, and heading up the station's community outreach for the Ken Burn's documentary, "The Address."
In addition to their general financial support, the Schaubs have committed a generous amount of funding as well as advisory support to help WGVU launch a customized version of PBS Learning Media for local schools. Currently, PBS Learning Media contains over 30,ooo pieces of common core curriculum, a number that will continue to grow exponentially over the next several years. The Schaubs have indicated that their commitment will be continuous as we built our program. They have also been instrumental in helping Grand Valley State University College of Education become the first University to incorporate PBS Learning Media in their educational classrooms for students completing their degrees in teaching.
Marcia, along with other members of the WGVU Engage Educational committee have developed and presented The PBS Learning Media Summit as a summer educational workshop for teachers to learn more about PBS Learning Media and how to use this resource in their classrooms.
The Schaub Family Foundation has a bright future of not only supporting WGVU, but helping to provide valuable learning tools through PBS Learning Media to classrooms across West and Southwest Michigan. They are very deserving of the Community Development Award.
