National Friends of Public Broadcasting at PMDMC in Atlanta 2013
On July 11, 2013, members of the National Friends of Public Broadcasting traveled to Atlanta, GA to participate in the Public Media Development and Marketing Conference (PMDMC). PMDMC is public media's largest conference devoted to issues surrounding revenue generation, marketing and management. It is Greater Public's (formerly DEI) signature event. Attended by more than 1,000 public media professionals, the PMDMC promotes best practices and innovation in Membership Support, orporate Support, Philanthropic Support and Marketing. The PMDMC also focuses on Cross-Disciplinary issues that bring multiple departments together.
NFPB hosted a session at the PMDMC entitled "Achieve Automatic Success by Shifting Your Volunteer/Intern Program into High Gear." The session brought in a diverse crowd, from volunteer coordinators to underwriting associates and offered insight into how interns and volunteers, when engaged in the right ways, can improve any station's bottom line. Presenters were Dorothy Pacella, Chair, National Friends of Public Broadcasting and Executive Director, Friends of Thirteen, Inc. / WNET; John Servidio, General Manager, NJTV/WLIW; and Sasha Schechter, Community Engagement Coordinator, Friends of Thirteen, Inc. / WNET. The session was moderated by Penny Zent, Station Manager, KAMU and Vice President, NFPB.
Session attendees heard from these presenters about how a highly successful internship model in place at NJTV contributed to saving the station when state funding was abruptly eliminated, how volunteers left envelope stuffing behind to contribute their own stories and skills to local programming and fundraising efforts and how a former intern used the skills learned during her internship to become a full-time staff member.
The overall take-away: interns and volunteers will quickly prove to be some of your station's most valuable resources. Click here to view Power Point slides from this session.
