2011 VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT AWARD
Nominated by Steve Volstad, Director of Marketing and Communications
UNCTV, North Carolina
Nomination Narrative:
It is my honor to write this letter of recommendation for an outstanding volunteer administrator whose passion for her chosen profession shines brightly during every event she manages. Her strong leadership abilities and eagerness to work with others are amazing. She has created new, long-standing partnerships in the community that benefit her employer, while managing the 4500 volunteers she oversees yearly. I am extremely proud to introduce you to one of North Carolina’s finest, Gloria Howell of UNC-TV.
After more than a decade of service in UNC-TV’s Engineering Department, Gloria stepped into the post of acting Volunteer Services Director in 2002 when the position suddenly became vacant shortly before our longest pledge drive. Gloria only had days to prepare for recruiting, training and assisting over 4,600 volunteers during a six-week period, and she excelled in the task. She has now served longer in the position than any other Volunteer Services Director in our station’s 55-year history.
She has introduced UNC-TV to partnering with other volunteer agencies, such as the Volunteer Center of Durham (NC) and Orange County (NC) RSVP 55+ Volunteer Program. She has incorporated area high school students into UNC-TV’s volunteer program, awarding community service hours for the students’ participation and support. Several students volunteer during school hours assisting staffers with various tasks. The duties range from everyday activities, such as stuffing envelopes, to the more creative endeavors, such as developing our edible garden, and the more adventurous, such as dressing in costumes of various PBS characters and performing for younger kids.
She updates station staff of potential volunteer opportunities and encourages them to utilize the assistance a volunteer can offer to minimize their workloads. Gloria has implemented cost-cutting procedures to ensure that volunteers remain a priority, not a hindrance. She has also introduced new measures to upgrade our health and safety codes, which were in need of attention. She uses her contagious personality, wit and tenacity to get others excited about volunteering as well. I do not know how she does it, but she has a one-on-one connection with everyone she meets. She makes every volunteer feel special and appreciated. As a result, UNC-TV’s volunteer retention record is outstanding.
Gloria has received her certification in volunteer management from NCAVA (North Carolina Association of Volunteer Administrators) and utilizes the principles she has learned to strengthen UNC-TV’s ties to the statewide community to this day. It is gratifying to know your organization recognizes volunteer managers for their hard work and dedication to their chosen profession.
