2010 Community Development Award
Nominated by Pam Osborne, Rocky Mountain PBS Director of Marketing
Super School News (SSN) is one of the many things that differentiates Rocky Mountain PBS from other television stations in Colorado. For the past 30 years (1980-2010), SSN has been the longest-running locally-produced television series in Colorado. Under the guidance of Rocky Mountain PBS volunteers and the professional production staff at our three network stations in Denver, Pueblo, and Grand Junction, more than 70 elementary schools and roughly 420 fifth and sixth graders have participated in creating newscasts about their schools over the past year.
The congenial and effective collaboration between the 15-20 volunteers, production staff, and schools across Colorado is unique and provides elementary school children around the state with the opportunity to prepare and produce a newscast, work on camera to deliver the news, and experience pride in seeing their newscast on air.
Super School News also promotes leadership, creativity, writing, and oratory skills – while students simultaneously learn about the broadcasting industry and have fun!
This year, SSN is celebrating its 30th anniversary on air. More than 9,000 students and an estimated 1,700 private and public schools across Colorado have participated in SSN over the course of its 30 seasons. In addition, more than 100 volunteers have been involved since the program’s inception, equating to thousands of volunteer hours. Many of our volunteers have participated in SSN for 20 consecutive years!
Rocky Mountain PBS has engaged in a variety of community activities to honor this major milestone. A special section of our website features video testimonials, stories and reflections from past participants, hundreds of archived photographs from over the years, and much more. In February, Rocky Mountain PBS held a Super School News Open House at our Denver studios. More than 200 guests attended the reunion event, which was generously sponsored by the Denver Rotary Club. Guests included former student newscasters since 1980 and their families, SSN volunteers, keynote speakers, program sponsors, and RMPBS production staff.
Rocky Mountain PBS is proud to offer such an extraordinary program to students across Colorado. It is an invaluable service to the community, and we hope to continue making a difference in the lives of Colorado students for many years to come.
