2008 DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD
Presented to Roger "Red" Frank of KEDT
Nomination submitted by Ludie Litz, Director of Volunteer Services
Nomination Narrative:
In an organization where staff is very limited and often extended, volunteers are essential to the overall mission of KEDT. ‘Red’ has made a great difference in the ability of South Texas PBS to serve the community. He has distinguished himself as a life-long volunteer at KEDT-TV and has continually demonstrated his capability to recognize the value of public broadcasting. ‘Red’ has worked in the field of education as a Teacher and Principal for 35 years. During his time as an educator, ‘Red’ recognized the value of public broadcasting. He has chosen to volunteer his time, upon retirement, to KEDT-TV and has been volunteering for the station since 1990, almost 18 years. ‘Red’ puts in an average week of 40 plus hours of unpaid tireless energy and dedication to the station. That equates to an average 2,080 hours a year; considering this is his 18th year with KEDT, he has amassed a record-breaking 36,573 hours to-date.
‘Red’ is charged with duplicating educational programs for educators across South Texas for teachers to use and integrate into their curriculum. On an average year, KEDT-TV requires about 9,000 duplicates of those programs for distribution. Again, he believes in the power of television as a tool to educate young students; and often reminds us that what we are doing is important and models a dedication to excellence. ‘Red’ loans out over 4,000 educational programs from KEDT-TV’s lending library every year. Although records were not kept until 1994, since that year Red has personally duplicated more than 85,000 VHS tapes from the KEDT Educational Library. During an average year, his tapes are potentially used by approximately 30 school districts, 80,000 students, and 5,000 educators throughout 160 member schools. He deals with hundreds of teachers every year most of whom think highly enough of his help and good nature to send cookies and cards as a way of saying thank you. His achievement, having worked in the field of education as a Teacher and Principal for 35 years, is immensely overshadowed by his desire to share his knowledge and expertise through volunteering as KEDT’s Educational Outreach/Lending Library Coordinator.
The single greatest strength that Red brings to this recognition is perseverance. He is determined to assist KEDT Education Services to achieve success by using the power of television as a tool to educate young students; and often reminds us that what we are doing is important and models a dedication to excellence. His dedication and tireless efforts always leave a positive impact on the people he meets and certainly with the South Texas Public Broadcasting family. He has found ways to support the work and efforts of the station’s Educational Television Department and KEDT as a whole. ‘Red’ has been a major contributor to South Texas’ Public Broadcasting station’s success by demonstrating an uncommon enthusiasm towards support of public broadcasting. By showing a zealous commitment to any South Texas PBS events; from operating a studio camera; making dubs for teachers of educational programs; answering phones during Radio and TV Membership Drives and working behind the scenes during the annual TV Auctions, Challenge, Food & Wine Classic, Classic Brew events, etc., Red has made a great difference in the ability of South Texas PBS to serve the community.
He is the epitome of volunteering; certainly a wonderful example of what one should aspire to be. He is an excellent example of the volunteer spirit and his contribution as a senior volunteer has made a great difference in the ability of STPBS to serve the community. His dedication and tireless efforts have positively influenced the people he meets and certainly the South Texas Public Broadcasting family.
Eighteen years later with KEDT, Red tirelessly promotes KEDT at any events and with anyone he comes in contact with at all times. He remains strong in his commitment to assist in promoting KEDT’s mission, and that is, ‘to educate, enlighten and inspire all communities of South Texas."
