1993 COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AWARD
Presented to WFYI FRIENDS
WFYI, Indianapolis, IN
WFYI, Indianapolis, with the assistance of the Friends and Diana Davis, organized a statewide essay and oratory contest for high school students. Each of the eight Indiana public television stations was able to send their winning student to a week long "Presidential Classroom" in Washington, DC.
The object of the contest was to demonstrate public television's educational and community resources to legislators and civic leaders. Over 200 students participated in the first year of the contest. The eight winners, their parents and teachers were honored at a Legislative Dinner complete with congratulations from US Senators and Congressmen.
Untold volunteer hours were involved to make this project a success. Throughout the entire project, Diana Davis urged the organizers to expand their thinking and to go further. This maximized the promotional effect and helped to make the contest a success.
