1993 COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AWARD
Presented to Friends of KUSM-TV
KUSM, Bozeman, Montana
"Where in Montana is Carmen Sandiego?" was the centerpiece of the KUSM Geography Education Outreach Project. Elementary and middle school teachers were invited to have students plan, script and film a 15-minute video based on the Carmen format. The topic was limited to Montana's history, culture and geography.
The project was intended to demonstrate the educational value of public television programming and to give students an opportunity to put together a project using their organizational, problem-solving and cooperative skills.
After reviewing the 30 video entries from across the state, a panel of judges chose a fifth grade class from Great Falls as the winner. The class was invited to Bozeman for a day-long celebration. Greg Lee was the host for a live 30-minute production where the winning video was shown. The class was awarded a $3,000 personal computer donated by a local computer store.
This was the first educational outreach project attempted by KUSM on a statewide basis. It was a success because it created a framework for future outreach projects, and because the students learned about television production and Montana history.
