The WNET/THIRTEEN Teen Leadership Institute is unique and timely. Co-Sponsored by the Friends of THIRTEEN, it directly addresses the question, "How does one effectively teach young people to be ethical in terms of accepting differences and managing race relations?"
This year's day-long session trained 375 teens and their teachers from 75 New York, New Jersey and Connecticut high schools. It built understanding between many cultures by stimulating thought, promoting, discussion and eliciting active participation. It provided teachers with materials on ethics in race relations and allowed them to network with colleagues. Students were charged with creating and implementing their own programs, creating a "ripple effect."
This project is designed to meet the needs of society and youth. It deserves the recognition of this award.
