Beginning with the formation of the WLRN-TV/WLRN-FM Community Advisory Board in 1978, Ruth Jacobs has served as a member and chairperson. Since 1975, she has been volunteer host, writer, and producer of more than 250 television programs sponsored by the Dade County Council of Parent Teachers Students Association. She has been a writer and producer for numerous programs broadcast on WLRN-TV. These have received local and state awards for documenting local efforts to preserve historic buildings and environments. She has been a lobbyist at the state and national level for "must carry" and for capital monies for all the stations that compose Florida Public Broadcasting. She has made dozens of personal calls and visits to state and national legislative leaders. Her efforts were significant factors in obtaining more than 5 million dollars from the Florida Legislature to construct and equip studios for her station.
When WLRN-TV faced financial realities and began on-air fund raising with auctions, Ruth recruited the Auction Chairman.
In all of these activities, Ruth has been a tireless ambassador for public television. Her participation has built cooperative relationships and support and extended WLRN's reach into the community. As a committed believer in public education and community involvement, Ruth S. Jacobs has been our conscience, continually reminding all of us of our commitment to education and the involvement of the public in Public Television.
