Bulbs in Bloom was a celebration highlighting KLRU's educational services. Free family activities and entertainment were held at the Travis County Farmer's Market. More than 4,700 yellow daffodil bulbs were planted. They symbolize the seeds of ideas public television plants in the minds of children. These ideas will bloom throughout the children's lives, just as the daffodils will bloom.
More than 1,000 people attended the Bulbs in Bloom celebration. Families participated in volunteer supervised activity stations associated with SESAME STREET, MR ROGER'S NEIGHBORHOOD, SHINING TIME STATION, AMIGOS, READING RAINBOW, SQUARE ONE TV, 3-2-1 CONTACT AND WHERE IN THE WORLD IS CARMEN SAN DIEGO?
Activities ranged from using everyday objects to perform simple science experiments to playing the computer game, "Where in the World is Carment San Diego?" and decorating Cookie Monster cookies. Costumed characters, children with hats and noisemakers they made at the events, parents, community leaders, and public officials and KLRU staff paraded through the Farmer's Market.
More than one thousand attendees had the opportunity to underwrite a bulb in honor of a child. The proceeds benefitted KLRU's education and community outreach programs. Community awareness of the event was high because of extensive print and television coverage.
KLRU hoped Bulbs in Bloom would create awareness of its educational services, increase community outreach, encourage viewing and show community support of KLRU. It did indeed meet all those goals and more!
