Presented to Wayne Berry
Louisiana Public Broadcasting
Wayne Berry has been instrumental in the development of the Louisiana Public Broadcasting network. As one of the original Louisiana Educational Television Commission members appointed by the governor in 1970, he helped persuade the Louisiana State Legislature to establish and fund the Louisiana Educational Television Authority (LETA). As a founding member of the Authority, Mr. Berry paved the way for public broadcasting in Louisiana.
As a LETA board member, he lobbied heavily for statewide support and was instrumental in the founding of Lousianians for Educational Television, now known as Friends of Louisiana Public Broadcasting. Beginning in 1973 Mr. Berry travelled statewide establishing Community Advisory Boards in each of LPBS's six transmitter areas.
His efforts were recognized by three different governors. Each reappointed him to the Authority Board for consecutive six-year terms. During the inception of the Friends Board, Mr. Berry served on both the Authority and the Friends Board as well as chairman of the Authority and member of the Executive Committee. In addition to the thousands of hours dedicated to the cause of public broadcasting in Louisiana over the past twenty years, Mr. Berry has also been a major financial contributor.
When asked what he felt was his most significant contribution he says, "forming the Friends group and enlisting the grassroots support of citizens statewide for educational television."
