The Friends of Nine in Redding, California, have been involved in several special projects which not only benefitted their public television station, KIXE, but have served the community of Redding in an outstanding way. Under the guidance of Kandis Lighthall, KIXE volunteer and special day class teacher for the Shasta County Office of Education, groups of 18-22 year old students with developmental disabilities have been assisting KIXE staff in the membership department. The students have responded to the station's needs by contributing their skills to a variety of projects.
Frank and Doris Lord, residents of the River Oaks Retirement Residence, have recruited and supervised over 30 fellow residents to organize a mailing of over 100,000 pieces to KIXE viewers in the past year. These volunteers contributed over 500 hours of their time at the residence resulting in a very successful direct mail membership campaign and the elimination of an August on-air drive. These volunteers have demonstrated an unselfish devotion and used their skills to promote KIXE in northern California.
